The Metropolitan Borough of Wigan was formed in 1974 from the town and County Borough of Wigan, and from Lancashire the Municipal Borough of Leigh, the Urban Districts of Abram, Aspull, Atherton, Hindley, Ince-in-Makerfield, Orrell, Standish, Tyldesley and Ashton-in-Makerfield, also the Golborne Urban District (except for the parishs of Culcheth and Glazebury which went into Warrington), the Higher End part of Billinge & Winstanley Urban District and the civil parishes of Haigh, Shevington and Worthington. For completeness, we have also included some items in the Chapel End part of Billinge village, now just over the boundary in the Borough of St Helen's. Some other villages and suburbs are, to the north: Marylebone, Whelley and Aspull; to west: Gathurst and Pemberton; to the east: Hindley Green, Astley Green and Daisy Hill, and to the south: Platt Bridge, Bickershaw, Bryn, Lowton St Mary, Pennington, Tamar and Westleigh
