The Metropolitan borough of Bolton was formed in 1974 from the town and County Borough of Bolton, together with the Municipal Borough of Farnworth, the Urban Districts (towns) of Horwich, Westhoughton,  Blackrod, Kearsley & Little Lever, also the southern part of the Urban District of Turton comprising the villages of Bradshaw, Bromley Cross, Dunscar, Egerton and Harwood. The suburbs of Bolton are, to the west: Montserrat, Doffcocker, Daubhill, Chequerbent, Heaton and Deane. To the North: Halliwell, Smithills, Barrow Bridge, Astley Bridge, Eagley and Tonge Moor. To the east: Withins, Breightmet & Darcy Lever, and to south: Burnden, Great Lever, Moses Gate & Prestolee. The whole area of the borough was formerly in Lancashire.
