The Metropolitan Borough of Stockport was formed in 1974 from the town & County Borough of Stockport, together with the Cheshire Urban Districts of Bredbury & Romiley, Cheadle & Gatley, Hazel Grove & Bramhall and Marple. From Lancashire; Reddish and the four Heatons: Chapel, Mersey, Moor & Norris. The Marple UD included from Derbyshire, the villages of Mellor and Ludworth. Some suburbs and villages of the borough are, to the west: Edgeley, Adswood, Cheadle Heath, Cheadle Hulme, Heald Green and Gatley. To the north and east: Brinnington, Offerton, Portwood, Compstall, High Lane, Windlehurst, Hawk Green, Strines and Woodley. To the south: Heavily, Great Moor, Davenport, Woodsmoor and Woodford
